Transformational Leadership Begins with Women — First Lady Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu Inspires at POWA National Convention in Lagos
The 2025 Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA) National Convention kicked off in grand style in Lagos, drawing over a thousand participants to a powerful 3-day gathering themed “Unlocking POWA Potentials and Transformational Leadership.”
At the heart of the event, Dr. (Mrs.) Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, wife of the Lagos State Governor, delivered a rousing address that urged Nigerian women—especially police officers’ wives—to embrace their innate strengths and become catalysts for societal change through intentional leadership and mutual empowerment.
“Many women carry untapped greatness within them,” Dr. Sanwo-Olu stated. “Some are brilliant academically, others are natural nurturers, counselors, or entrepreneurs. But unless we step up and support each other in small groups, those gifts may never emerge.”
She stressed the importance of nurturing leadership by forming smaller support circles where women can speak, share ideas, and grow in confidence.
“When women are grouped in smaller committees—maybe five or ten—you start to see incredible transformations. Confidence rises, talents surface, and impactful leaders are born. It’s time to move from potential to performance, from hidden gifts to visible change,” she added.
The First Lady also called on women to shift the narrative surrounding their role in society. Instead of accepting negative portrayals, she challenged women to rewrite the story—starting with how they use their voices.
“Let’s speak life, speak progress, and speak purpose. Use your voice to pray, to uplift, and to lead. Women should be part of national conversations—not sidelined. Leadership transformation begins with every woman willing to rise and lead—starting with you and me,” she charged.
Dr. Sanwo-Olu expressed her deep admiration for the strength and resilience of POWA members. She commended their dedication, not only as spouses of officers but as pillars within their homes and communities.
“We salute our police officers’ wives. Their sacrifices and silent efforts often go unnoticed, but they are the glue holding families together. Please extend our appreciation to your husbands—we see and respect the work they do.”
Also present at the convention were notable dignitaries including the Secretary to the Lagos State Government (SSG), Mrs. Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, and Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Hon. Cecilia Bolaji Dada, among others.
The annual convention continues to serve as a platform for capacity building, unity, and inspiration among police officers’ wives across Nigeria—reminding women everywhere that transformational leadership is not only possible but already within their grasp
