The Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Lagos State Chapter, Engr. Ibrahim Adigun, has called on young people across Lagos and Nigeria to become more actively involved in governance and civic affairs, describing youth participation as a vital ingredient for sustainable development and nation-building.
Speaking ahead of the Youth and Governance Symposium scheduled to hold on June 19, 2026, at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Adigun said the programme is designed to encourage meaningful interaction between young people and those in positions of authority while fostering a culture of active citizenship among Nigerian youths.
According to him, nations that have achieved remarkable political, economic, and social progress have done so by harnessing the energy, creativity, and innovative capacity of their young populations.
He noted that young people remain critical stakeholders in the future of Nigeria and must be given opportunities to contribute to governance, policymaking, and community development.
Adigun explained that the symposium will provide a platform for dialogue between youths, policymakers, government officials, and other key stakeholders, helping to bridge the gap between leaders and the younger generation.
He further encouraged young Nigerians to remain hopeful and committed to the progress of the country, emphasizing that every citizen has a role to play in building a better future.
Also speaking ahead of the event, Comrade Asoro Abubakar, Deputy Chairman, Lagos East Senatorial District of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), urged young people across the state to take advantage of the opportunity presented by the symposium.
He described the gathering as a unique platform for learning, networking, and engagement with leaders on issues affecting young people and national development.
Asoro encouraged youths from different backgrounds to attend the event, stressing that participation is completely free.
“This summit is open to all young people and participation is free. We encourage youths to come out in large numbers, engage with policymakers, share ideas, and become part of the conversations that will shape the future of our society,” he said.
The Youth and Governance Symposium is expected to bring together youth leaders, government representatives, policymakers, students, and development stakeholders to explore practical pathways for increasing youth participation in governance and strengthening democratic engagement.
Organizers believe the event will inspire a new generation of leaders while promoting collaboration between government institutions and young Nigerians committed to the development of Lagos State and the nation at large. :::
