More than 500 residents of Ikorodu Federal Constituency have benefited from a comprehensive free medical outreach facilitated by the Member representing the constituency in the House of Representatives, Rep. Babajimi Adegoke Benson, as part of his continued efforts to bring accessible healthcare closer to residents at the grassroots.
The biannual medical intervention, which held on Saturday, August 8, 2026, at the Jimi Benson Constituency Office, Ebute-Igbogbo Road, Ikorodu, was significantly scaled up this year to accommodate more beneficiaries and provide a wider range of medical services to residents.
The outreach offered participants access to health education, diabetes screening and intervention, general health screening and intervention, vision screening with free eyeglasses for eligible beneficiaries, free medication and dental checks.
The large turnout saw residents from different communities across Ikorodu Federal Constituency take advantage of the opportunity to receive medical attention, undertake basic health checks and obtain medication without having to bear the associated financial costs.
Speaking on the initiative, the Director-General of Jimi Benson’s iCare Foundation, Mayor Deen Sanwoola, described the outreach as another demonstration of Rep. Benson’s commitment to making healthcare interventions accessible to ordinary residents, particularly those who may otherwise struggle to afford basic medical services.
Mayor Sanwoola explained that the medical outreach is part of the broader people-centred intervention programmes sustained through the iCare Foundation, noting that the biannual programme has continued to evolve in response to the healthcare needs of residents.
“This is not simply about bringing doctors and medicines to the people for one day. It is about identifying health needs early, creating awareness and helping people take practical steps towards living healthier lives. Rep. Babajimi Benson believes that quality representation must touch every aspect of human life, and healthcare is certainly one of them,” he said.
He noted that the decision to scale up the second leg of this year’s edition was informed by the desire to reach more people and provide a broader range of medical services.
According to him, the impressive turnout and variety of services provided demonstrate the importance of bringing preventive and basic healthcare directly to communities.
“When people can walk into a programme like this, have their blood sugar checked, their general health assessed, their eyes examined, receive dental attention and, where necessary, leave with medication or eyeglasses without worrying about the cost, then we are bringing healthcare closer to the people in a very practical way,” Mayor Sanwoola added.
The outreach was coordinated by Alhaja Olabisi Odumbo, Coordinator of the Women Wing of the iCare Foundation, popularly known as iCare Women, who described the initiative as an important expression of the Foundation’s commitment to the wellbeing of families across the constituency.
Alhaja Odumbo said the decision to expand the second leg of this year’s medical outreach was particularly significant because women, children, elderly persons and other vulnerable members of families often bear the consequences when access to healthcare becomes financially difficult.
“We are delighted to see the number of people who came out today. This second leg of this year’s edition was deliberately scaled up because we wanted more residents to benefit and we wanted to offer more than just one aspect of healthcare. From health education and diabetes screening to eye checks, dental care, general medical screening and free medication, our goal is to ensure that people leave here better informed and better cared for,” she said.
She further expressed appreciation to the medical personnel and volunteers who participated in the programme, noting that their commitment contributed significantly to the success of the outreach.
For many of the beneficiaries, the intervention offered an opportunity to attend to health concerns that might otherwise have been postponed because of the rising cost of healthcare.
Some participants expressed appreciation to Rep. Benson for sustaining the annual intervention and for expanding its scope this year, describing the initiative as timely and beneficial to residents.
The medical team attended to beneficiaries across several areas of basic healthcare, with participants receiving medical checks and professional guidance based on their individual needs. Those requiring medication were provided with free drugs, while beneficiaries requiring vision support were able to access free frames through the vision screening component of the programme.
The dental check also provided residents with an opportunity to receive professional attention to oral-health concerns, an aspect of healthcare that is often overlooked despite its importance to overall wellbeing.
The outreach further provided health education aimed at encouraging residents to pay greater attention to preventive healthcare, regular health checks and early detection of conditions that can become more difficult and expensive to manage when left unattended.
The initiative forms part of the growing portfolio of healthcare and social interventions associated with Rep. Babajimi Benson and the Jimi Benson’s iCare Foundation, which has over the years implemented programmes touching different aspects of the lives of residents across Ikorodu Federal Constituency.
Beyond healthcare, the Foundation’s interventions have included food support, youth empowerment, business grants, educational infrastructure, employment facilitation and other community-focused initiatives.
The large turnout at Saturday’s outreach, however, underscored the continuing need for accessible preventive healthcare at the grassroots, particularly at a time when many households are grappling with increasing healthcare costs.
For the beneficiaries, the significance of the intervention went beyond the free services received on the day. It provided an opportunity for residents to learn more about their health, identify potential concerns early, and receive professional guidance on appropriate steps to take.
As the biannual medical outreach continues to grow in scale, the latest edition further reinforces Rep. Babajimi Benson’s stated commitment to ensuring that the dividends of representation are felt not only through physical infrastructure and empowerment programmes, but also through interventions that directly promote the health, dignity and wellbeing of the people.
With more than 500 residents benefiting from this expanded edition, the iCare Foundation medical outreach once again demonstrated that bringing healthcare to the doorstep of the people can make a meaningful difference in the lives of families across Ikorodu Federal Constituency.
